Have you ever got the urge to leave the country? Just pack up your entire family and say "Fuck it.We out!" Well that's what my good friends Thomas and Talya Peters did.
After much deliberation, they decided pack up and become expats and settle in Guanacaste , Costa Rica. And the invited me and Bleuroom Media to fly down to film their house hunting escapades. We had so much fun, we decide to turn into a 4 part docu-series. As I travel through This Inverted World I recently had the pleasure of being contacted by the Benjamin A Hooks Public Library to assist them in a nation wide photo competition of libraries displaying the beauty and modernization of their facilities. I immediately agreed. Although I have been to the library an innumerable amount of times, this was the first time I had to look at the facility from an artistic eye. I was blown away. From the tile and roof in the foyer to the kid's library that looks like a scene from the smurfs, this building is amazing...
I currently reside in Midtown Memphis's Central Garden. On the edge of this historic district is a dilapidated structure that resembles something out of a scene from Game of Thrones. Well maybe not that elaborate. None the less there is an effin raggedy castle in Memphis. Urban Legend has it that Prince Mongo (Robert Hodges), a wealthy absentee Memphian, obsessed with running for mayor, owned the place. In the 80's he owned several clubs throughout the city and at one point turned the castle like mansion into a club with parties that are revered as if it was Studio 51. Because I am fascinated with the medieval time period the building constantly intrigues, yet the castle is run down with an old Winnebago and the shell of a jacuzzi tub in the drive way. I couldn't help but the think of all the shenanigans that could have gone on in the back of a mansion in Winnebago and a mobile jacuzzi, during club hours (-_-) .
I've been in this area for nearly a decade now and have been patiently waiting for the right time to capture the Castle in the way that speaks to me, and today it snowed..... I stepped out into This Inverted World and this is what I saw. As I travel through This Inverted World, my journey brings me back home to Atlanta to photograph a few events and continue on a little city-scaping. On This journey I romped through the midtown area that encompasses Georgia Tech. On this particular day Georgia Tech played Miami. As I ventured through the city blocks on foot and snapping as I trekked, I was struck with a strong sense of nostalgia. I forgot the amount of time I spent in this area during my undergrad years. Although I played football for Morris Brown College, our head trainer was also a Georgia Tech trainer. Therefore when I tore my rotator cuff my rehab was held at GT. Their facilities reminded me of Rocky IV and the facility that Ivan Draggo was trained in. The most advanced human torture physical rehab devices known to man.
