Memphis joins the globe in celebrating Social Media Day 2014 Posted: Jun 29, 2014 10:33 PM CDT Updated: Jun 30, 2014 9:08 AM CDT By Nicole R. Harris - email
MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC) - Although it existed long before what we know it as today, social media has proven to be a driving force in the growth of society. Be it meeting and connecting with friends, fine tuning skills or marketing a business, social media has made a lasting impact on the world.
Right here in the Bluff City, Memphians have blazed a trail full of digital footprints. A few examples include Choose901, online support of the Sears Crosstown developments, a six-week re-emergence of the Tennessee Brewery and even the latest trending topic, #YouAintFromMemphis.
Even local media outlets have created innovative ways to disseminate information throughout the city.
Much of the support for the various pieces of the 901 puzzle, such as those mentioned above, is connected to online and digital efforts. So on Monday, for the first time, Memphis is joining cities across the globe to celebrate the social media revolution: Social Media Day 2014.
Founded in 2010 by Mashable, Social Media Day was created to recognize the various ways digital connections continue to flourish. Each year on June 30, people around the world come together to not only celebrate innovation, but to learn and share new knowledge with others.
This year, WMC Action News 5's Digital Content Producer Nic Harris got in touch with Mayor A C Wharton's office to ask he declare June 30 as Social Media Day in Memphis.
As a result, the city will recognize the day for the first time. While other cities hold formal events to commemorate the occasion, the inaugural year in Memphis is going to be slightly different.
To celebrate the day, WMC Action News 5, in partnership with Choose 901, want to hear from you.
Ask yourself the following things:
a. What does social media mean to me?
b. How can I use social media to help make Memphis a better place?
While you're at it … here are a couple of social media challenges to take into consideration on this Social Media Day:
c. Try to make at least three new social media connections on June 30. Do a little digging to find like-minded people in the city and introduce yourself.
d. In addition to making new connections, pick up a new skill: learn how to use Twitter, download a new app, figure out exactly what a ‘cloud' is.
Throughout the day, share your answers, experiences and photos on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtags #SMDayMem and #Choose901. We'll compile some of your answers into an infographic, which will allow you to see the current state of social media in Memphis, as well as determine ways to help improve it.
If you have any questions or suggestions, shoot Nic a tweet at @NicTheEditor or send an email to email@example.com. We look forward to virtually celebrating Social Media Day and narrowing the digital divide in Memphis.
